MI's Youth Advisory Council Leads by Example
by Dianne Mishra, Michigan Program Supervisor
April 2008
The Michigan Youth Advisory Council was busy during the spring helping to plan our Regional Service Project, where we partnered with Greening of Detroit. More than 170 students joined together to plant 90 trees and do clean up projects in one neighborhood.
In addition to this large project, YAC helped plan our End of the Year Celebration and a service project partnering with Camp Fire USA Camp Wathana.
Several members also spent their time at a YWCA Camp Cavell for a spring service weekend and others spent their spring break performing a service project at the Holland Rescue Mission.
During their weeklong break from school, six YAC members traveled to the west side of the state to Holland, MI, to complete a service project at the Holland Rescue Mission.
Brittany Jones and Bianca Jones (Cass Technical, Detroit), Katie Hess (Roeper School, Birmingham) Gina Hyun (Troy H.S.), Danielle Morris (Detroit Technology), and Katherine Liu (International Academy, Bloomfield Hills) assisted with serving meals to the men, women and children of the mission.
The students spent many hours working with the pre-school children who reside at the mission, completing a mural and playing with the kids at the local swimming pool.
The Greater Ottawa County United Way Volunteer Coordinator, Paulina Lawton, helped to arrange for this week of service. The students spent the evenings at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland.
A special thank you from buildOn to the Holland Rescue Mission, Boy and Girls Club of Greater Holland, and to the Greater Ottawa County United Way for helping to make this week a rewarding service opportunity to our students!
